ABOUT

My dream is to have the privilege to chronicle your love story. Whether I’m so fortunate as to catch you at the beginning of your story or part-way through, it would make me so happy to document the evolution of your family connection.

My photography career has had an evolution of it’s own, starting when I was a child and my mother gifted me my very own camera. I used my camera to document the family farm, taking photos of the gardens, orchards and pets. From those simple beginnings my photography career took me to Vermont, Valparaíso, Barcelona, San Francisco, Boulder and finally Northern California. During those 20+ (!) years behind the camera I worked for various print publications and event coordinators capturing portrait, travel, lifestyle and sport imagery.

Now as the mother of two boys I’m lucky to have a front row seat on the amazing event of childhood. Each smile, each giggle, each teardrop all create breathtaking moments as these little people learn about the world. My favorite family photographs are the ones which remind us of the joys of childhood, give us a peek into a sweet connection or just make us laugh.

A successful family or event photography session includes tons of giggling and fun as I get to know you and your family. I will do whatever it takes to catch these fleeting moments as they unfold around us. Whether I’m crawling in the grass, holding my breath on your living room floor or climbing trees I’ll be engaging with your loved ones as well as my own inner kid. Being a mom I understand that things don’t always go according to plan – I always break for last minute plans, phenomenal sunsets, snacks, meltdowns or the ice cream truck – anything goes. And often those unscripted moments give us the perfect photos that will grace the walls, books and hearts of your home.

My dream of photographing the families in my community, as I document their growing love for each other has already been realized with several of my clients. Looking back through my portfolio I’m so happy to see so many familiar faces smiling back at me, engagement kisses evolving to gorgeous weddings and then to pregnant bellies and then bouncing toddlers. I am beyond grateful to have been chosen to chronicle these love stories and I’m eager to capture many many more moments of connection. It’s no mystery that some of our most cherished objects are the family photos in our homes. The days are long but the years are short – let me slow down time for you and your loved ones soon, if only for a moment!

Evolution of a Photography Career

The evolution of my photography career has taken me on many amazing adventures. Once I left home and the sweet family farm memories behind I was so fortunate as to travel, going to college in Vermont, living in Valparaíso, Chile and Barcelona, Spain. At college I absorbed everything I could on journalism, eventually becoming the business manager of the college newspaper, writing articles and providing photography. I also took a dark-room photography class, which is where, wait for it, things really started to develop in my relationship with Tyler Chartier! (that’s one of his favorite jokes).

Travel

In Valparaíso I had an internship with El Mercurio, the newspaper of Valparaíso. I worked for Crónicas del Domingo, a full color insert magazine that ran on Sundays. Each week I would research and write a piece, with wonderful support from my editor Ximena Ceardi. Then one week Ximena came to me and asked if I thought I could include photos with my piece for a special launching edition in the southern city of Punta Arenas. She gave me film and I set out. When I returned she loved my photography so much she ran two articles and used one of my photos on the cover – I was ecstatic.

The Barcelona Metropolitan

In Barcelona I worked for a magazine called The Barcelona Metropolitan. It’s a magazine for the expatriate population – the office is full of people from Canada, England, the United States, Australia and beyond. We had so much fun working together – but my favorite times were when I was sent out with my camera.

Petaluma

The evolution of my photography career has come to a lovely place here in Petaluma. When I had more time as a new arrival I worked for the Argus Courier covering events like the Christmas Lighted Boat Parade, The Day of the Dead and American Graffiti. Now I attend those events with my family (we even won a prize this year for our 17 ft. dory in the lighted boat parade!) As I explored the amazing community of Petaluma I also discovered the Petaluma Mother’s Club. This wonderful group connects families and provides support for new parents. On several occasions I’ve been able to provide newletter covers and PMC event coverage. I’ve also been providing the cover photography for Petaluma Historic District Life, a magazine which focuses on the community and families who live in the historic district of town.

A Family Tradition

My passion for photography is a family tradition with roots that trace back to my great great grandmother, Gertrude Cockroft. She made her living as a photographer with her own photo studio which she operated out of her home in Alameda in the early 1900s. Her clients included families, women, men and children of the Bay Area. My grandmother, Alice M. Kett was a wonderful historian of our family. She provided the article below which describes Gertrude’s success in placing 4th in a nationwide photo contest she had entered. The contest was juried by national photographers and advertisers. The photograph below is Gertrude’s photo of her daughters Hazel (my great grandmother) and Phyllis, sharing their family connection of photography.

Your Love Story

My dream of photographing the families in my community as my great great grandmother did keeps me striving to capture those sweet moments of connection and love. Who knows, perhaps I’ll be so lucky as to photograph an individual throughout their life, starting with their momma’s pregnancy, through their infancy, childhood, adulthood and into the growth of their own personal love story? What an amazing dream! I look forward to meeting you and your loved ones should you choose me to capture your family’s love story.
